Gentle Readers .. Happy New Year.
I hope you’ve been well and have welcomed in the new year with joy and resolution for a happy and fulfilled 2019. Since last writing six months have passed. I’ve missed the adventure of daily walking but have been busy with my pens and at my easel, remembering some of the highlights of my walk by creating paintings and drawings. It’s been a departure for me from my familiar still-lives and portraits and it’s posed something of a technical challenge at times. But then I do like a challenge. All the pieces are now dry and framed ready to be hung at Sydney’s ARO Gallery in February.
If you happen to be in Sydney on Valentine’s Day and fancy celebrating with a glass of pink fizz, please do call in for the opening of the show between 6 and 8pm. My fellow artist and companion along the Great Glen Way, Sophie Dalgleish, and I will both be there. We should love to welcome you. If you’re unable to come along on the 14th then please do drop by any time over the following two weeks .. details above. If on the other hand, you’re super keen to see the works ahead of the show we can easily arrange a private viewing. To see all the works from the show please visit our websites: www.julesforth.com and www.sophiedalgleish.net.
They’re small works and all of mine take their inspiration from the walk. They are a combination of oil paintings on linen and pen drawings on watercolour paper. We barely need to say that they will last longer than your traditional Valentine’s bunch of flowers or box of chocs! We very much look forward to having your company.
Absolutely gorgeous Jules! Happy New Year.
Thanks Evan! Hope to see you at the gallery on the 14th! J
Fabulous, Jules. Many congratulations. Wish I could be there! Xx
Thank you, Woze .. very much wish you could be here! xx
Well done Jules turning miles of walking into an art form! They look stunning, good luck on the 14th, hope the exhibition goes well. X
Thanks walking partner! xx
What evocative pictures. Beautiful.
Thank you, Helen. How are you feeling having finished??
Not likely to be in Sydney on Valentine’s Day but I wish you well with your exhibition. I see one of your paintings shows the railway viaduct at Arnside which is within a few hundred yards of where I live.
Conrad! How lovely to hear from you. I’m afraid none of the paintings show your viaduct .. which one were you referring to? Will happily let you know where the inspiration for the painting was located.
I left a comment referring to one of your paintings ascribing it to Arnside viaduct, but now realise you didn’t walk near there as far as I know. I wonder where that estuary painting is with a viaduct in the distance?
Beautiful works, Jules! I especially like that you’ve captured the quality of light and expanse of the skies in your paintings. Bravo. Silvia
Thank you Silvia! The skies have really remained in my mind as a significant feature of the walk. Are you bound for Australia any time soon? Would be lovely to see you both.
These are lovely Jules. I really like the bleakness on some of these reflecting the weather that descended on us as your welcome last year.
All best with the exhibition
Alon
Thanks so much, Alon .. yes, I’m a sucker for a bleak landscape! My father always claimed his landscapes with snow sold badly but I’m hoping that in the current Sydney heat-wave they will be appealing.
Hey, let’s not dis the box of chocs, esp if delivered by a mysterious man in black!
Long way to fly .. from Miami but then I guess he’s pretty magic!
Wonderfully evocative artwork. The paintings were very gentle and gave a real sense of where you had been and what you had felt. I was most moved by the line drawings they gave more of an emotional feeling for the areas you had visited. This was particularly so for the drawings of the forest, where I could feel myself being drawn in.
Thank you so much Hilary .. such kind words. There are lots more drawings .. I’m thinking I should post them all on the website now.
Hi Jules, your paintings are certainly lovely and you must have enjoyed creating them and putting yourself in that space again. It shows, I think. Also I like ‘the fairytales’. There is so much in the English landscape that is somewhat fey and brings back flashes of childhood imagination. Again, your interpretations are very evocative. Philip and I should be able to come to the opening and I hope it is a great success for both you and your friend Sophie. xx
Hi Marilyn, it’ll be lovely to welcome you both on 14th. Thank you for your kind words .. beautifully crafted as always. Jxx
Dear Jules,
I wish I could be there – the landscapes look stunning. A great legacy of your achievement too. I hope the show is a resounding success and I will spread the word amongst my Australian contacts.
Sue
xx
Hi Sue .. thanks for your kind words. And for spreading the word. Love Jxx
Jules – these are beautiful. I love the oils – esp Homeward. Lovely tones, I can feel the mist and haze coming from the images. Doing them must have taken you back.
Good luck with the exhibition, I hope it goes well. Maybe one day I will make my debut visit to Australia!
Hope you can make it soon, Linda .. should love to have you stay. Thanks for your kind words. Jx
Beautiful, hope the exhibition is the huge success it deserves to be X
Thanks so much, Joanne. x
